The CARFMS webinar on UNHCR’s Global Trends in Forced Displacement 2025 Report examined the escalating scale and complexity of global forced displacement, highlighting how protracted armed conflicts, political violence, and terrorism continue to drive record levels of displacement worldwide. Speakers emphasized that while Canada remains an important resettlement country, growing domestic challenges that include refugee sponsorship pauses, processing backlogs, and changes to healthcare coverage are creating additional barriers for refugees seeking protection and long-term integration. Discussions also explored the concentration of displacement in a small number of major crises, the increasing burden on neighbouring host countries, and the need to address the root causes of forced migration through stronger conflict prevention, international cooperation, and durable solutions alongside humanitarian responses.
