This study examines the perspectives of Syrian refugee mothers living in BC with respect to the social support they received in early, middle, and later phases of resettlement. Results indicate that many participants experienced social exclusion, heightened gendered vulnerabilities, and opportunities for growth in all phases of migration (before, during, and after). In the post migration phase, refugees faced acculturation stress, social exclusion, a decrease in community relationships, and an unpredictable access to healthcare.

The report is focused on Afghan citizens who have been resettled or temporarily accommodated in hotels in Scotland. It explores key social connections Afghan refugee people, local organizations, and service providers identify as necessary to integration.

The authors focus on understanding the practices and meanings that volunteers attributed to their work on community sponsorship initiatives, particularly related to forms of political engagement and solidarity-making. The research shows that recent efforts by community sponsorship groups to support asylum seekers in their locales represent a shift in citizens' consciousness and commitment to political action.

This article takes a meso-level analysis of actions taken by a student-led local committee to revitalize the World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program at St. Francis Xavier University. The research results highlight the theory that actions of small groups can shape culture and the broader social system.

Some Western countries have adopted measures that have contributed to creative a negative sentiment towards migrants and refugees. Current developments are marked by the erection of walls, deportation and refoulement. Canada is generally depicted as a welcoming society for immigrants; however detention and deportation of asylum seekers, as well as barriers to integration, represent a challenge of the current policy.

This chapter aims to reconsider the notion of vulnerability in light of research conducted in Quebec/Canada and Lebanon with Syrian women considered to belong to a particularly vulnerable group, since they hold primary responsibility for supporting their families in exile. It is important to re-establish a meaning of vulnerability that is in tune with the ambivalent experiences of people undergoing forced displacement and that can provide avenues for response that go beyond strategic essentialization and victimization of people who are considered vulnerable but not necessarily eligible for protection.

Experts argue that governments rely on private and community sponsors to meet their humanitarian objectives, but do not provide adequate support to ensure their success. In Quebec, civil society organizations (CSOs) receive support from the government, but also critique the government’s approach to migration. Quebec’s sponsorship program is different from other provinces due to its relative autonomy over immigrant admissions and complete control over integration funding. The program is referred to as ‘collective sponsorship’, reflecting its reliance on more than just private resources. Migration, including refugee sponsorship, has become a salient issue in Quebec politics.

Finding stable housing is a pivotal step in the resettlement process. However, the rental market is elusive and expensive and the welfare system cannot adequately fill this gap. Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) housing staff skills combined with community’s goodwill helped overcome this challenge in the Syrian resettlement experience, however, this is unsustainable. What is needed is incentivising/requiring rehabilitation and new construction rental projects in all income segments to incorporate wider variety of housing units.

This report is an executive summary that presents the key findings from the Middle East Portion of the project “Evaluation of Refugee-led Organisations in East Africa and the Middle East.” The project examines refugee-led responses to COVID-19 pandemic and associated challenges and the role that refugees have been playing in their host states of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

The authors investigate the short-, medium- and long-term employment-related outcomes of resettled refugees from three admission programmes in Canada. After explaining the recent research on refugee economic integration, the authors analyze the 2019 version of the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) to compare the short- to long-term labour market outcomes of privately sponsored refugees (PSRs) and government-assisted refugees (GARs) and Blended Visa Office-Referred Refugees (BVORs).

Drawing on empirical research in Lebanon, this article offers an account of the ways in which—and which not—meaningful refugee participation and empowerment are achieved through representative committees. Spotlighting the case of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)-supported Sudanese refugee committee in Beirut 2014–2015, it focuses on three intricate and interrelated concerns—refugee participation, representation, and autonomy. The article finds that the design and function of the committee made it difficult for refugees to share authority with UNHCR over decisions that impact their lives.
